With every new season comes new trends, and it seems like this fall is going to be all about edgy statement pieces—one being the motorcycle jacket. The motorcycle jacket, also referred to as a racing jacket, is unlike the classic leather moto jacket you most likely have hanging in the back of your closet.
Instead, it stands apart with a higher collar, bold shoulder, bright colors like yellow or race car red, and its hallmark vintage patchwork. The outerwear piece is quickly becoming a must-have for the new season, with trend-setting celebrities like Rosalía and Kylie Jenner already favoring the edgy look.
The sudden popularity of this piece comes as no surprise since “bikercore” is on track to be one of the defining aesthetics of fall 2022. While this past summer was centered around dopamine dressing and soft, balletcore styles, fall is going to be about darker colors and lots of leather (or vegan leather). We’ve already seen a few celebrities shifting towards this edgy style—think Julia Fox and Kim Kardashian in her Balenciaga era—and more are sure to follow suit.

Now, back to the motorcycle jacket. In addition to being the perfect piece to take into fall, it also happens to be the perfect transition piece for a day to night ensamble, as proven by Kylie Jenner. For her take on the look, Kylie paired her vintage Mugler racing jacket with a deconstructed denim skirt and black lace up heels for a night out.

For a daytime feel, Swedish model Elsa Hosk styled her black and red distressed biker jacket with a pair of wide leg jeans and sneakers. Even with a white tank and jeans, adding a motorycle jacket can turn an otherwise simple outfit into a chic streetstyle moment.
Perhaps the biggest fan of the trend, though, is Spanish singer Rosalía, who has sported the style on multiple occasions in conjunction with her Motomami album release and tour.
We first saw her in the jacket all the way back in March, but more recently she wore a cropped version of the outerwear piece on stage, and then again in a matching set in an Instagram post.

High-fashion brands, such as Givenchy and Balenciaga, are adapting bikercore into their newest collections, but racing-style jackets are a fun item to lookout for while thrifting, especially because the look is meant to have a broken in feel to it. So, if you’re on the hunt for a new jacket this season, the biker jacket is one to get revved up for.
